NEAR BAGHOUZ: As destitute civilians stumble out of the Daesh group’s last enclave in east Syria, a mixed bag of unlikely characters are pitching in to help get them to safety.
They include a team of medics led by an American veteran and his children as well as a group of truckers from a remote Syrian town.
Close to 40,000 have fled Daesh’s last Euphrates Valley bastions into territory held by the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, in pitiful conditions after weeks of bombardment and food shortages.

TOKYO: Myanmar's army chief, who is facing international calls that he be prosecuted for genocide against the Rohingya Muslim minority, has denied any systematic army persecution and said such accusations were an insult to his country's honour.
In his first detailed interview since the Myanmar military launched a crackdown in 2017, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing cast doubt on U.N. estimates that some 730,000 Rohingya had fled to Bangladesh, and on their accounts of abuses by his forces, saying the refugees had been told what to say.

NEW DELHI: A hotel that caught fire in the Indian capital on Tuesday, killing 17 people, passed safety checks 14 months ago, but an investigation has revealed breaches of regulations, such as faulty alarms, prompting a mass reinspection of other hotels.
Poorly enforced regulations lead to thousands of deaths in fires across India every year and officials in New Delhi say an overstretched fire service is hampering safety efforts.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is expecting to sign two out of 10 memoranda of understanding (MoUs) for the establishment of an oil refinery and petrochemical complex in Baluchistan’s deep-sea port city of Gwadar during the first state-level visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on Saturday, officials familiar with the matter told Arab News.

The deals will see Pakistan join hands with Saudi Aramco for the state-of-the-art facility worth $10 billion, with a groundbreaking ceremony expected to be performed early next year for the purpose.

LONDON: Britain’s government is ready to leave the European Union without a divorce deal unless parliament votes for Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit plan, the government’s leader in the House of Commons, Andrea Leadsom, said.
“Essentially that is what will happen unless we don’t vote for a deal. The legal position is that we leave without a deal,” Leadsom told BBC radio on Friday.

SINGAPORE: A Singaporean man who gave financial support to a Syria-based Daesh militant from Malaysia has been detained under the city-state’s tough internal security laws, authorities said Friday.
The arrest highlights the continued influence of Southeast Asian militants fighting with Daesh in Iraq and Syria in radicalizing people back home, even as the militants face defeat in the Middle East.

WARSAW, Poland: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was forced to spend the night in Warsaw after his plane was damaged shortly before takeoff.
The prime minister and his entire entourage were on-board a chartered El Al plane early on Friday after a two-day visit to a high-profile security conference initiated by the US, when a tractor pulling it out on the runway apparently tugged it too strongly.
Netanyahu and his wife were taken off the plane and ushered back to their hotel.
